Many local crafts are for sale at the Zhongdian market and these make exotic and original gifts. These artefacts are crafted for the local population rather than outsiders or tourists, however in the future this may change as the tourist industry develops.
The most common craft works are copper pots, metal work and wood carvings, which adorn the window and door frames of the local Tibetan buildings. Other cottage industries include hand woven blankets, religious paintings, pottery, unique costumes, jewelry and Tibetan carpets.
The two villages of Nishi and Gonjo, northwest of Gyalthang are especially well known for their intricate craftsmanship. Nishi is famous for its black clay pots, while Gonjo specializes in beautiful wooden tableware.
One- or two-day excursions up north will reward you not only with a visit to these artistic communities but also with a stunning view of the confluence of the muddy Zhang Jiang River and the green Gonjo River. Dechen and the sacred Kawakarpo Peak beckon beyond.
