Gyalthang lies at the crossroads of many ancient civilizations. Places of interest around Gyalthang include the sacred Re-Nga Temple, Shudu Lake, the Summer Horse-Race Festival and numerous hot springs. These hot springs are set in a spectacular natural environment and will entice you to soak and relax.
Sumtseling Monastery is affiliated with the Yellow Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhists and built by the fifth Dalai Lama. The largest Tibetan Buddhist lamasery in Yunnan, the temple was built in 1681, and later almost completely destroyed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The monastery has since been reconstructed and is active again, housing 800 lamas.
Down the awesome gorges of Kham flow Asia's mightiest rivers, the Yangtze, the Mekong, and the Salween, descending from their sources on the rooftop of the world. The magnificent Tiger Leaping Gorge in Dechen lies at the point where Haba Snow Peak faces the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain over the Yangtze River. The gorge is 35km long, 12km wide and plummets more than 3,000 meters. At its narrowest point it spans barely 30m.
